Automated Shipping Labels for Peak Season: 3 Workflows to Set Up

Written by ShippyPro Team | Oct 20, 2026, 7:14:23 AM

Peak season shipping usually breaks in three places: labels created one by one, addresses that carriers reject, and carriers that fail when volume spikes. Automated shipping labels fix all three before they turn into a backlog. With ShippyPro AI Shipping Automation, three ready-made templates clean recipient data, generate the label the moment an order arrives, and switch to a backup carrier if the first one fails.

You'll find all three in the Templates tab of the ShippyPro shipping platform. The catch: workflows triggered by new orders only apply to orders imported after you create them, so the time to set them up is now, not on Black Friday morning.

Key Takeaways

  1. Peak season volume turns small manual tasks, like fixing an address or retrying a label, into hours of backlog.
  2. "Prevent Errors of invalid customer Info" formats recipient fields to meet carrier requirements as soon as the order is imported.
  3. "Generate label" creates the label as soon as the order is imported, with the carrier chosen by destination country.
  4. "Reroute to a carrier in case of error" generates the label with a backup carrier when your first choice fails.
  5. Workflows triggered by imported orders only apply to orders imported after you create them, so set them up and test them before the rush.

Why manual label creation breaks during peak season

Online demand peaks hard and fast. Adobe reported that US shoppers spent $14.25 billion online on Cyber Monday 2025 alone, up 7.1% year over year. Carriers respond with peak surcharges and tighter capacity: UPS ran demand surcharges from late October 2025 to mid-January 2026.

On a normal day, a rejected label is a two-minute fix. During peak week, the same error repeated across hundreds of orders means missed pickups and late deliveries. Here is how the two approaches compare.

Criteria Manual label creation Automated shipping labels
When the label is created When someone gets to the order As soon as the order is imported
Carrier choice Picked by hand, order by order Set by rules, such as destination country
Address and name errors Found after the carrier rejects the label Fields formatted to carrier requirements as soon as the order is imported
Carrier failure Orders sit in the Errors tab until someone notices Label generated with a backup carrier

Automated shipping labels: 3 workflows for peak season

Good shipping automation software should cover the whole path of a label: clean data in, label generation on import, and a fallback when a carrier fails. All three templates live in the Templates tab of ShippyPro Automation, and each follows the same logic: a trigger, optional conditions, and an action.

1. Prevent Errors of invalid customer Info

Many of the errors that block shipments come from recipient data: a street name that is too long, a full state name where the carrier expects a two-letter code, a city with special characters. This template runs when a new order is imported and applies Format recipient info, which formats recipient fields to meet carriers' requirements and avoid label generation errors. You tick the fields to format: name, company name, phone number, state, city and address lines 1 and 2 are selected by default, and you can add postal code, order description and email.

For name, company name, city and address lines, you can set a maximum number of characters. The template caps name at 50 and Street 1 at 30, and you can change both to match your carriers. Behind the scenes, ShippyPro shortens long address lines, moves a house number from Street 2 to Street 1, converts state names to ISO codes, removes accents and special characters from city names, and formats phone numbers to the country standard. For background on how carriers expect addresses to be structured, see the UPU's international addressing standards.

2. Generate label

This is the template that removes the bottleneck. When a new order is imported, ShippyPro checks the recipient country and runs Generate shipping label with the carrier you chose for that destination. The template comes with two IF branches, so you can send one group of countries to one carrier and another group to a second carrier. Add more IF branches for extra country groups, or an ELSE branch for everything else.

The shipment is ready within seconds, so your team only has to print. If you already batch-print, this pairs well with bulk label printing.

3. Reroute to a carrier in case of error

This is your peak season safety net. It triggers when an order is in error, meaning label creation failed with a carrier error. A condition checks whether the error message contains the text you specify, then Generate shipping label creates the label with a secondary carrier.

ShippyPro also has an auto-retry option for system errors, such as temporary carrier downtime. It retries label creation on a fixed schedule, from 5 minutes up to 24 hours after the failure, and if every retry fails the order stays in the Errors tab for you to switch carrier by hand. Reroute is for the moments when you'd rather not wait and want a different carrier to take the order straight away.

Automate your peak season labels

Switch on all three templates and test them on real orders before Black Friday.

How to set up automated shipping labels before peak season

1
Open the Templates tab

Go to Automation in the ShippyPro side menu, open Templates, and click Use template on the workflow you need.

2
Fill in conditions and actions

Pick recipient countries, the carrier for each branch, the error text to match, and the field limits for recipient info.

3
Set the priority

Give each workflow a priority from 1 to 999. Higher numbers run first, so give the formatting workflow a higher number than the label workflow.

💡 Check priorities whenever two workflows could create a label for the same order.

4
Save, enable, and check the Logs

Click Save & enable, then watch the Logs tab on real orders for a week before volume rises.

⚠ Warning: automations are not retroactive

Workflows triggered by imported orders only apply to orders imported after the workflow is created. Orders already waiting in your account will not be picked up, so enable your templates well before Black Friday.

💡 Pro Tip: use "contains" for new values

The "is any of" dropdown only lists values already present in your orders. For a country you have not shipped to yet, or an error message you have not seen, use Contains or Starts with instead. For the Reroute template, copy the error text directly from your Errors tab.

Peak season problem Template Trigger Action
Carrier rejects long or badly formatted addresses Prevent Errors of invalid customer Info New order is imported Format recipient info
Labels pile up waiting to be created Generate label New order is imported Generate shipping label
Main carrier fails or is unavailable Reroute to a carrier in case of error Order in error Generate shipping label (backup carrier)

FAQ

What are automated shipping labels?

Labels created by a rule instead of by hand. In ShippyPro, the label is generated as soon as an order is imported, with the carrier set by conditions such as destination country.

When should I set up shipping automation for peak season?

Several weeks before Black Friday. Workflows triggered by imported orders only apply to orders imported after you create them, and you want time to check the Logs on real orders before volume rises.

What happens if my main carrier fails during peak?

The Reroute template triggers on orders in error and generates the label with a secondary carrier when the error message matches the text you set.

Can I use more than one template at the same time?

Yes. Set a priority for each workflow so recipient info is formatted before the label is generated, and avoid two workflows creating labels for the same order.
