Poste Italiane Tracking: Track Your
Italian Postal Shipment

Poste Italiane is Italy's national postal service — the country's largest logistics operator with 12,000+ post offices. Unlike BRT or GLS, Poste Italiane offers multiple distinct shipping services, each with its own tracking format and delivery speed. This guide covers all of them: Crono, SDA, Poste Delivery Business, Raccomandata, and Pacco Ordinario.

Step by step

How to track a Poste Italiane shipment

All Poste Italiane tracked services use the same lookup tool — "Cerca Spedizioni" (also known as "Dove Quando").

1. Find your tracking number. Your Poste Italiane tracking number is on the receipt from the post office, in the shipping confirmation email from the retailer, or in your order history online. The format depends on the service — see the tracking number section below.

2. Track on poste.it. Go to the Poste Italiane website and use the "Cerca Spedizioni" function on the homepage. Enter your tracking number and view the full status timeline. You can also track via the Poste Italiane app, by calling 803 160 (from Italy), or via WhatsApp at 371 5003715.

3. Track via ShippyPro (merchants). If you ship via Poste Italiane, SDA, or Poste Delivery Business through ShippyPro, all tracking updates flow into the Track & Trace dashboard automatically. One unified view — Poste Italiane alongside BRT, GLS, DHL, and 190+ other carriers — through a single multi-carrier shipping API.

Poste Italiane, SDA, and every other carrier — one screen

Poste Italiane, SDA, and Poste Delivery Business are three separate connections in ShippyPro — but they all appear in one unified dashboard. Filter by service, status, or marketplace. Download reports with full recipient details.

Normalised statuses across all carriers. Poste's "in lavorazione" and BRT's "in transito" map to the same event. One notification rule covers all of them.

Format reference

Poste Italiane tracking number formats

Unlike single-format carriers like BRT, Poste Italiane uses different tracking number formats for each service.

Raccomandata / Registered
RR 1234 5678 9 IT
Starts with RR + 9 digits + IT suffix
Crono / SDA / Express
200658203531
12–13 numeric digits, no letters
Poste Delivery Business
PDB12345678901
Alphanumeric, starts with PDB prefix
International (EMS)
EB 7928 6454 9 IT
2 letters + 9 digits + IT country code

Important: Poste Italiane tracking is only available for "tracked" services — those with an identification code. Standard unregistered letters (Posta Ordinaria) cannot be tracked. If you cannot find a tracking number, the sender may have used an untracked service.

Status reference

Poste Italiane tracking statuses explained

Poste Italiane statuses are displayed in Italian on poste.it. Here are the translations and what each means.

Presa in carico / Taking charge
Poste Italiane has accepted and registered your shipment. It will soon enter the processing cycle and be directed toward the destination.

In lavorazione / Under processing
The shipment is being processed at a Poste Italiane operational centre — sorted and prepared for dispatch to the next hub or final delivery depot.

In transito / In transit
The shipment is moving between Poste operational centres. This may appear multiple times for long-distance routes. For standard services, this can last 1–3 days.

In consegna / Out for delivery
The postman or courier has the shipment and will deliver it today. For Raccomandata, a signature will be required.

Consegnato / Delivered
Successfully delivered to the recipient. For Raccomandata and insured shipments, Poste records the signature and timestamp as legal proof of delivery.

Mancata consegna / Failed delivery
Delivery attempt failed — no one home, incorrect address, or access issue. Poste leaves an avviso di giacenza. For Raccomandata, you can collect it at your local post office within 30 days.

Disponibile presso Punto Poste / At Punto Poste
The shipment is available for collection at a Punto Poste pickup location or your local post office. Bring valid ID and the collection notice (avviso).

In attesa di sdoganamento / Customs clearance
International shipments only. The parcel is being inspected by customs. You may be asked to provide additional documentation. Customs delays vary from hours to several days.

Reso al mittente / Returned to sender
The shipment is being returned — after failed delivery attempts, uncollected from post office, or refused by the recipient.

International tracking: what happens when the shipment leaves Italy

When you see "Partita dal Centro di Scambi Internazionale" (Departed from the International Exchange Centre), it means the shipment has left Italian territory. From this point, tracking is handled by the destination country's postal operator. Poste Italiane tracking will no longer update — you need to track with the receiving postal service using the same tracking number.

How to connect Poste Italiane to ShippyPro

Poste Italiane has three separate services in ShippyPro — each requires its own connection. ShippyPro acts as a carrier API aggregator, bringing all three into one multi-carrier shipping API alongside 190+ other carriers.

Three services, three connections, one dashboard

Poste Italiane — For Crono and standard postal services. You need Webservice credentials (not Weblabeling) from your Poste commercial representative.

SDA — The express courier arm. Connect via the SDA logo in ShippyPro using your Customer Code, Postazione code, and API password from your MySDA account.

Poste Delivery Business — The ecommerce-specific service. Requires ClientID and SecretID from your Poste commercial contact, plus your Centro di Costo code in CDC-000NNNNN format.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track my Poste Italiane shipment?
Go to poste.it and use the "Cerca Spedizioni" function on the homepage. Enter your tracking number — the format depends on the service (RR for Raccomandata, numeric for Crono/SDA, PDB prefix for Poste Delivery Business). You can also track via the Poste Italiane app or WhatsApp (371 5003715).
What does "in lavorazione" mean on Poste Italiane tracking?
"In lavorazione" means the shipment is being processed at a Poste Italiane operational centre — sorted and prepared for the next stage. It is a normal processing status and does not indicate a problem.
How long does Poste Italiane take to deliver in Italy?
It depends on the service: Crono Express delivers in 1–2 days, SDA in 24–48 hours, Poste Delivery Business in 1–3 days, Raccomandata in 3–5 days, and Pacco Ordinario in 4+ days. Express services are fastest for mainland Italy; all services add 1–2 days for Sicily and Sardinia.
What is the difference between Poste Italiane, SDA, and Poste Delivery Business?
All three are part of the Poste Italiane Group but serve different purposes. Poste Italiane handles traditional postal services and Crono express. SDA is the express courier arm for B2C and B2B. Poste Delivery Business is the ecommerce-specific service with features like return labels, QR code returns, and Punto Poste drop-off. In ShippyPro, each requires a separate carrier connection.
Why is my Poste Italiane tracking not updating?
Poste Italiane and SDA apply rate limits on tracking updates. If the status shows "Unknown" or does not change, wait 24–48 hours for the limit to reset. Standard postal services (Pacco Ordinario) have fewer scan points than express services, so gaps between updates are normal. If no update for 3+ business days, contact Poste Italiane at 803 160.
Can I track a Raccomandata online?
Yes. Enter the Raccomandata tracking number (starts with RR followed by 9 digits and IT) in the "Cerca Spedizioni" tool on poste.it. You will see acceptance, transit, and delivery status. After a failed delivery, you have 30 days to collect it at your local post office.
What happens when an international Poste Italiane shipment leaves Italy?
When you see "Partita dal Centro di Scambi Internazionale," the shipment has left Italy and tracking transfers to the destination country's postal operator. Use the same tracking number on the destination postal service's website (e.g. Royal Mail, La Poste, Deutsche Post) for further updates.
How do I connect Poste Italiane to ShippyPro?
Poste Italiane, SDA, and Poste Delivery Business each require a separate connection in ShippyPro. For Poste Italiane, you need Webservice credentials from your commercial representative. For SDA, use your MySDA portal credentials. For Poste Delivery Business, you need ClientID and SecretID plus your Centro di Costo code.
Can I collect a Poste Italiane parcel at a Punto Poste?
Yes. With the "Scegli Tu" service, you can redirect deliveries to a nearby Punto Poste pickup location. After a failed delivery attempt, Raccomandata and insured shipments are held at your local post office for collection.
Does ShippyPro offer a shipping API for Poste Italiane?
Yes. ShippyPro's multi-carrier shipping API handles Poste Italiane, SDA, and Poste Delivery Business through one RESTful endpoint — label creation, tracking, rate comparison, and returns for all three services plus 190+ other carriers.
