Shopify Shipping Label Errors: Why Label Generation Fails and Fixes

A Shopify shipping label fails for one of four reasons: the address doesn't pass carrier validation, a required field like phone or last name is empty, the package has no weight or dimensions, or the carrier account is blocked. Shopify says something went wrong but rarely says which field. Here's how to find it fast, and how shipping automation stops it happening.

Shopify Shipping Label Errors
Most Shopify label failures trace back to a single bad field in the order data.

Key Takeaways

  1. Most Shopify shipping label errors come from order data: an address line over the carrier's limit, a missing phone number, or a blank last name.
  2. Error 030009 is a carrier validation error, usually FedEx, flagging a missing or badly formatted recipient field. Phone number is the usual culprit.
  3. Generic messages cover several causes at once, so check address length, special characters and name fields in that order.
  4. Weight and dimensions don't flow through from Shopify, so assign them once per SKU rather than typing them per order.
  5. ShippyPro sorts failed labels by error type with a suggested fix, and can correct recipient data and retry the label itself.

Why Shopify shipping label generation fails

Shopify passes order data straight to the carrier's API. Reject any field and no label is created, so the order sits unfulfilled. What you see in the admin is often the carrier's own error passed through, which is why it reads like a code rather than an instruction.

030009
Could not create label
A required recipient field is missing or fails the carrier's format check, most commonly the phone number.
→ Add a phone number with country code
What Shopify shows you What is actually wrong Where to fix it
The shipping address is invalid Order came from a channel where the address can't be edited Create a draft order with the correct address, buy the label there
This order's address couldn't be verified Formatted correctly but no match in the carrier's database Check the postal code in the country's postal lookup tool
The address line exceeds 35 characters Street line over the carrier's cap (DHL and UPS 35, Evri 32) Shorten Address 1 or Address 2
Could not create label. Error: 030009 Carrier rejected a recipient field, usually the phone number Add the phone number with the country code
There was a problem buying shipping labels Catch-all: emojis, accents, a blank last name, or a wrong phone length Check First Name and Last Name, then strip special characters

The four checks that clear most Shopify shipping label errors

1
Recipient name

Both First Name and Last Name must be filled in. FedEx and others reject a label with only one name.

2
Phone number

Include the country code and match the length to the destination country. This is the most common 030009 trigger.

💡 Some carriers also need a valid phone on your origin address under Settings > Locations.

3
Address length and characters

Keep Address 1 inside the carrier's limit. Strip emojis, symbols and accents from the address, the customer name and your store name.

4
Weight and dimensions

Enter them on the fulfillment screen before requesting rates. Without them the rate call fails and no carrier service appears.

⚠ Warning: don't reuse a scanned label

Once a carrier scans a label it can't be reprinted for another shipment. Carriers treat duplicate label use as fraud, which can mean price adjustments or losing access to that carrier entirely. Buy a replacement instead.

Stop chasing failed labels through your Shopify admin

See how bad order data gets caught before the carrier rejects it.

Stop fixing Shopify shipping label errors one order at a time

Checking four fields by hand is fine at twenty orders a day. At two thousand, a 2% failure rate is forty orders your team opens, edits and retries every morning. Correct the data on import instead.

⚙️
Fixing it in the Shopify admin

Open the order, read a carrier code, guess which field it means, edit, buy again. Repeat per order, and the same bad data arrives tomorrow.

Fixing it with an automation workflow

Workflows on the "Order imported" trigger clean the address, state, city and company name, fill a missing phone number, assign the parcel and generate the label. Bad data never reaches the carrier.

Which automation action fixes which error

What breaks the label ShippyPro Automation action
Street line too long, or house number typed into Address 2 Format address (1 and 2)
Full state name where the carrier wants a two-letter code Format state
Accents or special characters in the city field Format city
Company name longer than the carrier allows Format company name
Recipient phone number or email is empty Add recipient phone number / Add recipient email
No weight or dimensions on the order Add packages, matched by SKU, product name or item quantity (100 g minimum)
Order has already failed and sits in the Errors tab Autofix recipient info, then retry label generation
An Order in error workflow corrects the recipient fields and retries the label on its own.
An "Order in error" workflow corrects the recipient fields and retries the label on its own.

Failed orders land in Orders > Errors, sorted by error type, with a "How to fix?" button giving the cause and the suggested fix, so nobody interprets raw carrier codes. Auto-Fix goes further: on an "Order in error" trigger it corrects all recipient fields by default, including company name, address, city, state and postal code, then retries the label up to twice. You can deselect any field you'd rather it left alone. Once the label exists, tracking flows into Track & Trace.

💡 Pro Tip: let system errors retry themselves

Carrier downtime is temporary, so it doesn't need a human. Auto-Retry reprocesses errors classified as system errors five times on a widening schedule: 5 minutes, 45 minutes, 2 hours, 5 hours, then 24 hours. If all five fail the order stays in Errors for you to reprocess or reroute.

Shopify shipping label FAQ

What does "could not create label, error 030009" mean in Shopify?

A carrier validation error, most often from FedEx, meaning a required recipient field is missing or badly formatted. Check the phone number and country code first.

Why is the Buy shipping label button missing on my order?

Usually one of four things: no valid phone on your origin address, account verification still running, an unpaid label balance, or an order that's already fulfilled.

Can I change my Shopify shipping label template or size after buying?

Only while you're still on the print page, where you can switch between thermal 4x6, Letter and A4. After that you have to void the label and buy it again.

Does a shipping platform replace Shopify's built-in label maker?

It sits in front of it: orders import automatically, rates compare across your own carrier accounts, and labels print in bulk. You can also run the whole flow through the ShippyPro API.
